When I first read "Dear Dad," I immediately ordered a copy for a friend, and now I have just reread this inspiring book. "Dear Dad" has had a profound impact on me. I cannot image what it would be like to face a terrifying medical diagnosis of my young child, and I admire how Dustin, and particularly his mother, managed the challenge. At times I found myself chuckling, as I could totally relate to Dustin's observations and comments, and then crying as I witnessed his mother, struggling to hold everyone and everything together. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I started. Five hours later I finished. I couldn't put it down. The brought you into the life of a very frightened young boy but, boy he's a fighter, he made me laugh. It's not at all depressing. If you have a child that is going through this it will make you keenly aware of how THEY feel. And you'll learn a lot about what their going through. Emotional, compelling and inspiring. Excellent read.
The writing is so vivid you will be in the hospital ward with 14year old Dustin as he completes the arduous 10 week journey that places his leukemia in remission. His candid observations about the the doctors and nurses as well as the other cancer patients on the adolescent cancer ward will keep you from putting the book down until finished.
A compelling and insightful book, revealing the unvarnished reality of a life and death struggle with cancer. Impossible to put down, this is a true story of incredible courage in a foreign world of needles, painful procedures and protocols, rarely explained to the patient, ahead of time. Young Dustin shows amazing tenacity as he struggles to survive the barrage of experimental treatments which ravage his body night and day. This is a journey of tenuous friendships, unfolding maturity and best of all, life long remission. While this is not an easy read, it is not depressing either. Brilliantly conceived and sensitively written by Dustin's Dad, Douglas Keil, we are carried along by the rawness and reality of it all; the voice though is all Dustin's. His honesty makes us laugh and cry but ultimately leaves us feeling hopeful about life and even death.
This book is great for really understanding the personal struggles of someone who goes through leukemia! and for the families and friends involved!
An excellent book. Gives us all a first-hand look at the true meaning of "hope". Anyone who has faced adversity in their life or along side of a loved one's life would enjoy and benefit from this story. Sincere thank you to the author and the survivor for sharing your story.

I thought the letter format Douglas Keil chose to relate his difficult story was very interesting and made a difficult story easier to read. One letter may bring a tear to your eye, the next a smile or even a giggle. Never will you forget the message of bravery, love, friendship and hope. Thanks for sharing your very personal story.
