Neal Thurston embarks on a vacation to Mexico seeking the inspiration to propel him past the writer's bloc that is preventing him from producing a novel to send to his impatient New York City agent. There, he's welcomed by long-time friend, Don Pancho, who owns and manages Rancho del Artista, a picturesque complex of pueblo-style villas that offers lodging to struggling artists. As Neal settles in at the Rancho, he falls into a deeper puzzle than the one to find a theme for his novel, as he meets the captivating Dominga, a mysterious beauty, who is a vivid contrast to Estralita, a young, impressionable woman who searches for seemingly elusive respectability. Meanwhile, Jose, a strangely spiritual local hobo who Neal stumbles upon, holds the clue that may help him uncover the truth about Estralita while trying to shake off the spell that Dominga has cast upon him.
Author Tom Mutchler brings this little corner of old Mexico to life in his novel, with the Rancho's "tall cacti and the trailing bougainvillea splashing in purple streams form terraces and verandas." He lures you into this pleasurable tale with the descriptive authenticity lent by his own reflections on an earlier period in his life when he and his artist-wife, Ione, spent time at this mellow artists' colony outside Mexico City.
