Two men battle the wilderness—and their desire.
It’s 1793, and Simon Cavendish needs to get to his station at Fort Charlotte, a fur-trading outpost in the untamed Canadian wild. The fort is only accessible by canoe, and there’s just one man daring enough to take him on the perilous, thousand-mile journey from Montreal this late in the summer.
Young Christian Smith, the son of an Ojibwe mother and absent English father, is desperate for money to strike out on his own, so he agrees to take Simon deep into the bush. As they travel endless lakes and rivers, the arduous expedition takes its toll.
Yet the attraction between Simon and Christian, two men from vastly different worlds, grows ever stronger. Locked in a battle against the wilderness and elements, how long can they fight their desire for each other?
Note This gay historical romance from Keira Andrews features adventure in the wilderness, outdoor sex, and a happy ending. Standalone, free romance novella.

3.5 stars. I've always been fascinated by the voyageurs - traveling by canoe and paddling 14 hours a day (at a rate of 55 strokes per minute), carrying 2 or more packs weighing 90 lbs., portaging that canoe for up to a mile over land to the next body of water. Some became voyageurs rather than starve in the streets of Montreal, some were indentured servants. It was a hard life but many loved what they did:"I could carry, paddle, walk and sing with any man I ever saw. I have been twenty-four years a canoe man, and forty-one years in service; no portage was ever too long for me, fifty songs could I sing. I have saved the lives of ten voyageurs, have had twelve wives and six running dogs. I spent all of my money in pleasure. Were I young again, I would spend my life the same way over. There is no life so happy as a voyageur's life!"
Keira Andrews book, set in 1793, really does a good job of showing what it was like at the time. Simon is originally from England, via India where he worked with the East India Company, and is going to Fort Charlotte to manage the port there. Christian Smith is paid to transport Simon for a rather huge sum of money, since it's late in the season and they have to get to the Fort before the rivers and lakes ice up.
Both Simon and Christian are gay, which they slowly discover as their journey continues. IMHO, their first sexual encounter skirted the line between consensual and non-consensual but as the story progresses they fall into a sort of companionship with benefits.
I liked the development of the characters and LOVED the historical aspect of this story, and while the ending was HFN, it wasn't what I expected to happen (trying not to spoil anything here). The historical aspect of the story got 4 stars from me, with the romance probably getting closer to 3 stars, but overall I'd rate the book as 4 stars.

Voyageurs Gay Romance edition by Keira Andrews Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The author throws you quickly into the middle of an adventure with just a quick introduction of the characters. Two strangers forced to work together and only then finding out their differences and similarities. Ms Andrews keeps the excitement throughout.
I liked this novella however it would have been better if the characters had known each other more. When they declared there love for one another I thought how could you be in love you hardly know each other. It was cute though.
I see the struggles and victories the gay community deals with in our times, but to read of the lives of two gay men in the late 18th century was very enlightening...bear grease...Yuck!
I love the story of Simon and Christian and the history of traveling by canoe and on foot was interesting.
I really enjoyed this short story. I think the author did a great job at building the characters, while also weaving in meaty cultural and historical content. I found myself really invested in Simon and Christian's story, even though this isn't a time period (or setting) I generally am drawn to. The conflicts presented were well thought out and believable, and executed well in such a short story. On top of that, the "romantic" scenes were quite satisfying (p) and flowed logically in the plot. Great all around read!
Not a lot to say here. The writing was decent enough, with very few typos. But the basis of the story is that 27 year old Simon falls in love with and agrees to throw his career away for the 20 year old Christian after Christian has taken his virginity by force. Christian decides to spend the rest of his life with the man who almost got him killed by being stupid and stubborn. I didn't enjoy the rape scene, so any sex after that was just words on the page to me. Simon never seemed very smart and therefore barely likeable. To some degree, I could understand Christian's gruff nature. But there was almost no character development at all, and there was nothing to base a possible relationship on. They rowed across lakes, walked over land, argued, and had sex. I guess it was just based on the happiness of finding another gay man in the area, which seemed to be rare.
Voyageurs has an interesting setting (and I always appreciate the rare historical romance that teaches me a bit about actual history) as well as an interesting contrast between the cultures and personalities of the main characters. The story has enough plot for its length and a hopeful ending.
But.... even in the novella format I think there is scope for the author to show more of a connection between the characters than Andrews manages here. The story is told entirely from Simon's point of view and Christian rarely speaks more than necessary for most of their journey. I would have liked there to be more conversations between them to show a meeting of minds as well as their physical attraction to each other. Simon learns about Christian's background and community but there's not much sense of an emotional connection forming between them, until suddenly they're in love. It felt a bit abrupt and unsatisfying.
Nevertheless, I wish more authors would make use of the romantic possibilities of unusual settings. Voyageurs is certainly worth checking out.
Acquired this story as a freebie and it was working for me right up until the dub-con that fell into rape. I do not mind stories that are forthcoming about what's in between the pages, but it seemed to come completely out of left field. I give Voyageurs two stars for the writing alone. In my opinion, it was the only bright spot. This story was my first introduction to Keira Andrews' writing. Not certain if I will read other titles since this one didn't go over well for me.
